Accommodation is the wide sector of the travel industry that includes any commercial establishment for the provision of accommodation to travelers for a temporary period of time. It constitutes the base product of the hospitality ecosystem and may take many different forms, from traditional hotels and resorts to alternative accommodation formats such as vacation rentals, hostels, serviced apartments, etc. All are managed via dedicated inventory distribution systems.
From a commercial and technological point of view, accommodation in travel and tourism is usually classified into two different categories depending on the structure of the inventory.
This category contains hotels, motels, and resorts. The defining characteristic is Room Type inventory. A hotel sells a category (e.g., Standard Double Room). The inventory is homogenous; Room 201 is exactly like Room 202. This offers the advantage of simplified distribution (selling 50 Standard Rooms via an OTA).
This category includes Short-Term Rentals (STRs), vacation homes (Airbnb/Vrbo), and villas. The defining characteristic is Unit-Based inventory. The supplier is selling an individual physical unit (e.g., Sunset Villa on 5th Street). The inventory is one-of-a-kind; no two listings are exactly alike. This requires complex technology to manage as quantity is always only one.
Managing these two kinds of accommodation needs different software stacks.
Irrespective of the type, accommodation providers use some standard metrics to measure success:
ROH stands for Run of House. It is a type of booking where the guest commits to pay a flat rate, and the hotel gives him whatever room is available when he arrives. It gives hotels the option to fill awkward gaps in inventory.
A serviced apartment fills this gap. It provides hotel-like facilities (cleaning, front desk) but with the comfort of a home (kitchen, separate living space), targeted at long-stay business travelers.
Popularized by hostels and platforms such as Airbnb (private rooms), this is the booking of a single bed in a shared room or private room in a shared home, markedly reducing the cost to budget travelers.
