Sabre (originally an acronym for Semi-Automated Business Research Environment) is one of the major technology providers for the global travel industry, operating one of the three principal Global Distribution Systems (GDS) alongside Amadeus and Travelport. While best known as the marketplace that links travel buyers (agencies) with sellers (airlines/hotels), Sabre is also a critical IT provider, offering the operational software (PSS) that operates many of the world’s largest airlines and the Central Reservation Systems (CRS) for hotel chains.
In the history of technology, Sabre is of legendary stature. Developed in the 1960s as a joint venture between American Airlines and IBM, it is generally accepted as the world’s first real-time e-commerce system.
Prior to Sabre, airline reservations were kept track of manually on lazy Susans and index cards. Sabre added the concept of real-time inventory, which enabled agents to view seat availability in real time. This infrastructure set the blueprint for all online transaction processing today, which has had impacts far beyond the travel sector.
Today, the company is working on three different verticals:
For decades, travel agents had dealt with Sabre through a command-line interface called the Blue Screen, where they typed in cryptic formats (such as W/UA123 to decode a fare).
While effective for power users, the learning curve was steep. The company has since migrated to Sabre Red 360, a graphical workspace that combines the speed of the old command lines with the visual richness of modern web apps (API-driven content, hotel images, and interactive maps) in a way that bridges the divide between the old, efficient, and modern ways of doing things.
No. American Airlines sold Sabre off entirely in the year 2000. It is now an independent technology company that is publicly traded, although AA is a significant customer.
SynXis is Sabre’s hotel platform. If you booked a room on a hotel’s direct website, there is a high chance that the booking engine is driven by SynXis. It is the hotel counterpart of airline PSS.
While both are GDSs and IT providers, the strength of the market is different. Sabre historically has been strong in North America and with large US carriers. Amadeus (based in Madrid) is dominant in Europe and has a bigger market share in the low-cost carrier (LCC) PSS market.
